It’s About the Logo, Stupid!

2006/03/22

As Jules put it in Pulp Fiction: “Personality goes a long way.”

Beeing the software and hardware admin of choice for some of my familiy members and friends, I recently installed Firefox on my girlfriend’s new PC. She was formerly familiar with Internet Explorer but was really pleased with Firefox. And now, what do you think she likes most about it?

  • Tabbed Browsing?
  • RSS/Live Bookmarks?
  • Speed?
  • Usability?

Nope. What she likes most is…

Firefox logo

…yes. The neat red fox. “So that’s what I spend months of spare time on coding and reporting bugs for!” you might think. “She’s not worthy!”

Calm down. It doesn’t mean that she doesn’t worship the fact Firefox doesn’t hang when loading a complex web page, complies with CSS 2, does proper box layout and stuff. But the simple fact is: She doesn’t know about that stuff. She takes it for granted, as long as it’s working well.

While the quality, the features and the open-source-ness may have been the reasons for the press to praise Firefox, the reason for a lot of people loving it may simply be it’s personality. And that’s pretty much the achievement of the logo designers. Kudos!
