Interactive Flash Diagrams at Google Finance

2006/03/23

Google just drawed out a new fragment of it’s World Domination Master Plan. With “Finance”, Google now offers a financial information service. This is how it looks when displaying information about Google itself.

I can’t judge how far the usefulness of their information differs from others. That’s up to the financial guys. What I can say, though, is that the way they display the data is pretty neat. Especially the interactive diagram showing the stock price history is noteable.

It applies a principle that has been explored early by the HCIL TimeSearcher research project: tight coupling between chart and zoom widgets. While the chart and zoom controls are built in Flash, the application also highlights context-sensitive news headlines outside the diagram via JavaScript.

While this basic interaction works really well for me, I’d like to see wether Google is going to offer more professional analysis interactions, maybe going beyond SmartMoneys tools.
