The Advisory Group of Computer Graphics (AGOCG) has some interesting resources about information visualization on their web site (which is not maintained any longer). The Review of Visualization in the Social Sciences (also available as PDF, 6,5 MB), published in 1998, is a massive overview of visualization approaches to all kinds of problems, plus a huge bibliographic resource.
