Updated: Keeping Firefox Bookmarks in Sync via FTP

bookmark synch image

If you use Firefox on more than one computer, e.g. at work and at home, you might find it troublesome to keep your bookmarks in sync. Torisugari’s “Bookmarks Synchronizer” extension might be a helpful solution to you.

When you exit Firefox, it saves your bookmarks in an XML file on your FTP server of choice. When you start Firefox, it loads the file from the same location and imports the bookmarks. You can also initiate synchronisation manually from the Bookmarks menu.

The extension as published by the author worked only up until version 1.5. I edited the included install.rdf file in order to support all 1.5 versions.

Download bookmarksync-102-FF15.xpi (33 KB)

Here is information about the original version. Torisugari, the author, seems to have vanished, though.

For Mac and Linux users: Please give feedback if the extension works as expected, sinceI can only test on Windows. It would be especially interesting to test synchronization between OSes, e.g. Windows and Mac OS.

Just installed it on my brand new MacBook Pro running Deer Park 1.5.0.2 — and it just works (TM)! ;-) It even remembered the preferences I entered when using the extension with an ancient version of Firefox (possibly <1.0) on my historical PC.

BTW, there have been various projects for an extension like that on http://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/ . Once you try to find ethem all it’s getting a little confusing. It appears as if the authors don’t maintain the extensions very well, so people start doing the same thing as I did – branching other peoples code.

Here are some more:

Bookmark Synchronizer 1.0.1 (the one this is taken from)

Bookmark Synchronizer 3 (a branch of the above) https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1989&application=firefox

Really great – finally I can synchronize my bookmarks between Linux (Debian Sarge 3.1 / Firefox 1.5.0.2) and Windows 2000 on the Notebook. Now someone could invent same thing for FF extensions, please ;-)

Any chance this gets updated for 1.5.0.3?

Falko am 16. Mai 2006 um 15:58 Uhr

Did change the version string in the install.rdf to 1.5.0.3 and seems to work (.xpi is just a .zip).
